G.O.A.T.   © Phil Dunne  /  For Lab III: Tempo

As the next Lab is music based, I thought Id do tributes to my favourite musicians and artists. Michael Jackson had so much energy flowing through him - I wanted to express that with this piece. When I was 17, I watched him perform live here in Dublin. It was during his History world tour, when his career was pretty much in decline. What I watched on stage that evening still shakes me to my core profoundly; I don't want to say that it was superhuman - that's praising somebody far too much - but he was definitely not human in my eyes. MJ was like this musically charged creature...hit each step in perfect sync with every beat. A freak of nature with skills honed to perfection from an early age? He was giving such incredible energy and emotion. He was vessel for something greater than himself. It's like MJ released this timeless energy and it's still travelling around the earth. Not everybody loves his work. If you don't, I'd tell you to listen to Off The Wall or Thriller - masterpieces!
