I decided to take a very conceptual approach for my first two submissions to OBSOLETE. The theme is one I had wanted to explore for quite some time, and I had a mess of ideas I wanted to experiment with.
Chief amongst them was the fairly literal interpretation of humanities obsolescence. I wanted to examine and create the machine that would be chiefly responsible for our extinction, and also machinery that would supplant us once we're gone.
This image is called "Harvest", and it's a depiction of machines that have learned to live in harmony with the natural environment. They're built from it, they exist with it, they find a way to extract energy from it without destroying anything - essentially, they've found a balance that humanity was never able to.
It was a challenging image to make, one that benefited greatly from the different versions I put through the workshop. It came together slowly and painstakingly - as you will see, there were a lot of stops on the way from my initial rough piece to the final execution.
