Ari Wenkle consistently produces some of my favourite work for our Chapters. His frequency in both spotlight selections and my personal staff picks is testament to this. He produced another excellent submission for OBSOLETE, and here we examine the process that went in to it's creation.
Justin Maller: Lovely work on this piece Ari, was super glad you got something in for the Chapter. Break down the concept of this one for me?
Ari Wenkle: For this piece I was envisioning the way we relate to personal electronics. It's getting to the point where are hands are used merely to manipulate technology rather than as tools themselves.
As such, there is a lot of noise and static in our environment which limits us from fully experiencing our lives.
Justin Maller: These images show the development of the piece, but what's your personal creative process like? Do you sit down and jam, or do you like to sketch things out first?
Ari Wenkle: I usually like to have a rough idea before starting but I don't usually sketch anything out... For example in this piece, I had the idea of two stylzed hands. But from there, I like to jump in and create. I try out various things, see what works and take out what doesn't.
After I'm pretty satisfied with the work, I get some feedback from the other members which is always super helpful and lets me figure out what can be made better.
Justin Maller: Thanks for sharing all this mate! What were your impressions of the Obsolete chapter? Whose work stood out for you?
Ari Wenkle: I thought it was a great chapter with lots of different takes on the theme. The two featured artists definitely stood out. Niklas set the bar high at the beginning with his first two submissions... I also really liked your heart piece and Mike's All That's Left submission.
Justin Maller: Thanks dude!
